Khaela Maricich |
Went to lecture today of Khaela Maricich (of The Blow) and Melissa Dyne, which was about their collaboration and ventures into performance art. They perform at various venues, mostly traditional concert halls, aiming to explore the relationship between someone and his or her surroundings. They try to make viewers more aware of their environment in a minimalist way, citing influences like Robert Irwin.

Dyne and Maricich use the audience as both material and collaborator. They find great interest in the varied reactions of their audience, and revel in accidents on stage.
I was not able to go to the sold-out performance, so I cannot comment on the performance with certainty or authority. But from what I heard, it seemed like their overall concept was not quite resolved, and I did not quite understand the difference between their performance and a normal (if quirky) concert. I know they are still experimenting and constantly alter their performance.
I think the most interesting part was Maricich's use of personal narrative. It plays a significant part of both her performance and her music. Using her own life as a foundation, the narrative she creates spirals out of reality into fantasy, creating a unique yet personal story.
Check out her website.
